Mackerras Fanfare to Gain Pride of Place

Sir Charles Mackerras (1925-2010) was an Australian conductor and highly regarded authority on the operas of Janacek and Mozart. His extensive contributions to classical music lead to having a room dedicated to him by Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music at the Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich.

Last Tuesday evening, Big Smoke Brass were invited to perform a short fanfare to mark the re-opening of the Sir Charles Mackerras Room after renovations were recently completed. As with most of the music performed by the group, there are no existing fanfares written for the unconventional line up and so Peter Lewis composed the Mackerras Fanfare for the prestigious event.

The group were delighted when asked by the organisers of the event whether or not the score for the specially composed fanfare could be published and presented in the Sir Charles Mackerras Room, allowing Big Smoke Brass to leave a legacy at the institution where all of its members currently study.
